The Meaning of Qi
Author:Admin Release time:3/1/2013 Read:1960

Speaking of qi, it is easy to think of the air we breathe. Qi and air are actually two different things. What is qi in the qigong perspective? , "Qi", in terms of the theory of traditional qigong, contains the following contents:

(A) The Qi of Nature

The ancients called it qi, vitality, qi of Tao, or Tai Chi. It is equivalent to initial “Hun Yuan Qi” in Zhineng Qigong. This qi fills the entire universe. It is the most basic physical form of the universe and all substances. It is invisible to ordinary people, but it is the origin of all things.

(B) The Qi of Human Body

This qi is the origin of human life activities and is the fundamental invisible substance to maintain normal life activities. The Traditional Chinese Medicine has a wide discussion on qi, according to the location and function of it. It includes Ying Qi, Wei Qi, Central Qi, Qi of the Meridians, etc. In Zhineng Qigong, it is called “Hun Yuan Q” of human.

(C) The Interaction and Transformation between the Qi of Human Body & the Qi of Nature

Qigong theory holds that human life process is the interaction and transformation between the qi of human body & the qi of nature. If the body can successfully uptake the qi of nature for its own use, one can maintain a good health condition, or else having disease or even death. Practicing qigong is to strengthen the interaction and transformation process between the qi of human body & the qi of nature.

It should be noted: 1. The theory of qi from Qigong is originated from Chinese classical philosophy. Hence, it should be understood from the entire background of the Chinese classical culture in order to get the complete and correct understanding of qi. 2. Modern scientific practice has proved the qi in qigong is an objective substance existed in reality, and is the cornerstone of Qigong Science. Since 1978, China's scientists have done a series of experiments about Qi on both its possible physical and biological effects. The experimental results showed that qi could really act on the instruments and samples (both live body and inanimate objects). The results could not be explained by the modern scientific theories, but the change occurred. As we all know, the interaction can only happen between substance and substance, in order to change the state of matter. Hence, although those scientific experiments are not enough to reveal what qi is, it can be proved that qi is an objective substance in reality.
